Dyspareurnia (painful sexual intercourse) can be caused by many things. They are categorized as either physical or emotional. Physical causes include insufficient lubrication, irritation, trauma, infection, and vaginismus (involuntary vaginal wall muscle spasms).

Emotional causes can range from anxiety and depression, to stress and a history of sexual abuse. Treatment is available and is aimed at the underlying cause. Medications, counseling, communication with your partner, lubrication, and longer foreplay can all be very helpful.

A visit to the Gynecologist may be needed to determine the cause of your pain.

It depends on the cause of the discoloration. The most common cause of discoloration is normal melanin deposition. Melanin is the pigment that gives your hair, skin, and eyes their color. Genitalia can be pigmented too. There is no changing this.

Other causes of discoloration can be from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s). Yeast infections can lead to a reddening of the skin and some viruses can infrequently lead to skin changes (Herpes, Genital Warts). The good news here, is that when the infection clears up, so do the skin changes. Be aware, however, that viral STI’s are have no cure.

Hi i am 17I have a question and i am a bit worried.Several times I used a Dr. Scholls massager as a sex vibrator. I believed it had the heat on (i can’t remember)It was new; however, my question is, will it damage my vagina or hymen?Right after I stopped using it i began to feel a bit discomfort on my right side below my belly button. at times i feel like is something is pinching me or a bruise.I’m worried and scared .Also, before i started using that massager, i used a different one that was dirty over the years. it had dirt and it was in my parents room. no one in my family has a sexually transmitted disease but can i still get an infection from it?can it harm me?I would really appreciate if you can please answer my questionsI’m worried

It is important not to use any device not specifically designed for this purpose. You can injure yourself, but you would likely feel it at the time. Breaking the hymen is a normal part of growing up, and can happen with using tampons, as well as during sexual intercourse. It is not dangerous.

The discomfort you are feeling may be some cramping due to vibrator use, or may be due to a urinary tract infection (ie bladder infection). Always make sure the device is clean, as bacteria can lead to a bladder infection. Sexually transmitted infections are less likely, but still possible if someone else has used it within 24 hours of you and it has not been cleaned.

Generally speaking, unless you are using an inappropriate device or are particularly aggresive, you will not damage your vagina.

If your symptoms persist or get worse, you will need to see your doctor.

This is worrisome. My concern here is you could still be pregnant and the pregnancy might be in the tube (“tubal or ectopic” pregnancy). This is a very dangerous situation, and can be life-threatening. The only definitive test for pregnancy is a blood test. If you cannot get this at Planned Parenthood or the free clinic, you must go to the ER.

Your symptoms may also be due to a particularly bad period. Some periods cause more cramping, bloating, and lightheadedness than others. You may also have a bladder infection. This can also cause some of the symptoms you are experiencing. You will need a urine test to know for sure.

Most importantly, you need to find out if you are pregnant. Spotting does NOT mean you are not pregnant, and you may be early enough that the urine test has not yet turned positive. Again, the only way to know for sure, is the blood test. If this test is negative, you can rest assured that your symptoms are likely due to hormones which may be a little out of whack this month due to stress, infection, diet, or just because.

Please go to the ER immediately should you pass out, have severe abdominal pain, significant vaginal bleeding or fever.

Acne, unfortunately, is very common in your teenage years. It’s due to hormones, which cause an increased production of oils and blockage of the pores (a substance called sebum). Sebum combined with bacteria leads to acne.

The most natural ways to help control acne, are washing your face with a gentle, hypo-allergenic soap, eating healthy, and avoiding touching your face during the day. Oils and bacteria on your hands only add to the problem. No need to scrub harshly or exfoliate, as this can actually make things worse by breaking down the skin.

Avoid pore-clogging make-up, or alcohol based astringents. Vitamin E (removed from the capsule) and triple-antibiotic ointment (eg.Neosporin/Bacitracin) can help with scarring. Avoiding prolonged sun exposure can also help reduce scarring. There is no definitive way to remove acne scarring. It can be made less noticable through laser or chemical treatments, but this is certainly not natural.

If the swelling is from vigorous sexually activity, this will subside in time and the use of a lubricant can help. More than likely the size of your labia will change as you continue to grow.

You more than likely have PMS or pre-menstrual syndrome. Just before your period, it is not uncommon to have all the symptoms you are describing. Now, that said, if you did not use protection, you can still get pregnant even the day before your period. You can get pregnant while ON your period. It is too soon to know, however, so you should take a urine pregnancy test in about 2 weeks.

And, of course, you can get a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) if not using protection. But again, it would be too soon for you to have these symptoms from an STI.

It is more than likely your hormones (PMS) causing not only your symptoms, but the delay in your period. Most teenagers are irregular, and this is very normal.

Along with acne, mood swings, hair growth, and voice changes, erections are a normal part of puberty. The good news is, they will decrease. As you get older, this will happen less and less often.
